About the Northeast Kingdom
The Northeast Kingdom of Vermont has a strong regional identity. It is mostly forest and lakes, with sprinklings of hard-scrabble farms and industries. A shadow of its former position as an area rich in natural resources, hard workers, and industrial strength, the Northeast Kingdom suffers from too much poverty, lack of meaningful work, and food insecurity. But Vermonters are resilient, resourceful and used to coping with nature's moods and rapidly changing manifestations.
“It seemed just a natural thing to do, to call it the Northeast Kingdom. And now I tell them that they’re going to not finish the highway from St. Johnsbury across to New Hampshire or they’re going to not put the railroad in passable condition, they better call it the Forgotten Kingdom, instead of the Northeast Kingdom.”
-Senator George Aiken, 1949
